The book is an account of the life and lifetime of the author's Dutch-American grandparents who belonged to the so-called Generation of 1914 (born in the period 1880 - 1890). It offers a compilation of their private recollections against the background of the main events in the first half of the 20th Century, with two world wars, the depression and the ongoing process of modernization which reached its first stage of completion in the aftermath of the Second World War. In their private cross-Atlantic embrace the author's grandparents represent the emergence and foundation of the present Western world.
